Nestled in the picturesque Shropshire countryside, our parish encompasses the villages of Ightfield and Calverhall. As your Parish Council, we are committed to fostering a vibrant, connected, and forward-thinking community. Whether you're a long-time resident or new to the area, we invite you to explore our website and discover the many ways we serve and celebrate our parish.
About our Parish
Ightfield is a tranquil village with deep agricultural roots, its name believed to derive from Old English, signifying "creature field." The village is home to St. John the Baptist's Church, a Grade II* listed building designed by the renowned Victorian architect William Eden Nesfield. Part of the AMICA Benefice, Ightfield Church is a focal point for local worship and community life, with a vibrant Farmer’s Market held on the third Saturday of every month.
Calverhall, approximately one mile from Ightfield, is a village rich in history and community spirit. Evidence suggests the area was occupied as far back as 1066 AD, with large curving holloways and raised house platforms in surrounding fields. The village boasts two moated sites, indicative of its medieval past, and was once owned by the Calverhall family, a noble lineage of Norman descent.
The village is home to the Church of the Holy Trinity, which was built in 1879. The church is part of the AMICA Benefice, a network of five local churches serving the community.
Calverhall is also known for the "Olde Jack Inn", named after a famed historical drinking vessel known as the "Jacorra." The village has recently won a countywide community award, naming it the best village in Shropshire, thanks to its improvement in recent years, including the establishment of the Millennium Pond and active sports and social groups.
Our Role
The Parish Council is the first tier of local government, acting as a voice for residents and a conduit between the community and higher levels of government. We are responsible for delivering essential services such as street lighting and playgrounds, supporting local interest groups, and providing recommendations on planning applications. Our aim is to enhance the quality of life for all who live, work, and visit our parish.
