St. John the Baptist Church
A Treasured Landmark For Over 900 Years
St. John the Baptist, a Grade II* listed church is first mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086, showing Ightfield (Istefelt) already having its own priest! The current stone building mostly dates from the late 15th century, with beautiful medieval stonework and a sturdy Perpendicular Gothic tower, which makes it instantly visible within the Parish.
The chancel features early English lancet windows, whilst the west tower has diagonal buttresses and a battlemented parapet. The interior includes a 14th century piscina, a 15th century octagonal font and 19th century pews.
A major Victorian restoration in the 1860s by architect George Gilbert Scott (also known for St. Pancras Station) added many of the features we see today, including the chancel's oak fittings, decorative tiled floors, carved pews, and striking stained glass windows designed by William Wailes which bring warmth and colour to the interior.
St. John the Baptist is part of the AMICA Benefice (Ash, Moreton Say, Ightfield, Calverhall, Adderley) and holds regular Holy Communion, Morning Prayer, and seasonal services, as well as bell-ringing every Wednesday evening from 7pm onwards.
